Abstract
Original scene contrast or brightness ratios can often approach 1000:1. Curve shaping due to emulsion and projection characteristics ensures that as much of this as possible can be reproduced on the cinema screen, and feature cinematographers have developed their techniques based on these characteristics. When films are transferred to television, however, the telecine chain and the TV screen are capable of reproducing a much narrower tonal range. Thus in contrasty or shadowy scenes, much information is lost. Gamma control and other telecine correction techniques tend to yield an unnaturally bright image, different from the director's original intentions. Colorfilm's telecine-compatible print (TCP) produces a high-quality video image with improved shadow detail that retains the look of the film to a greater extent.
