Abstract
Subjective tests were performed on the Philips high-definition system for North America (HDS-NA) signal using a hardware simulator of a complete Ku-band satellite transmission system incorporating the Region 2 direct broadcast satellite (DBS) channel spacing of 14.58 MHz. When NTSC interfered with HDS-NA and HDS-NA interfered with NTSC, interference protection ratios were measured and compared with the Regional Administrative Radio Conference (RARC) '83 protection ratios for NTSC in this environment. Measurements of basic received quality and the effects of noise on the HDS-NA signal were also performed. The methodology of the FCC Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Systems, described here, was employed for the subjective testing. The tests indicate that the RARC '83 protection ratios are adequate for HDS-NA in this environment and that good picture quality is attained with a minimum carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) of 16.2 dB.
