A New Method of Specifying the Resolving Power of Television Camera Tubes Using the RCA P-300 Test Chart

Abstract
The specification of the resolving power of a television camera tube is a very complex task. The tube cannot be evaluated except in the total television camera system, each component of which may influence the final result. The resolving power is generally specified in terms of amplitude response to a square-wave pattern of a given line number. However, it is now known that the geometrical shape of the resolving aperture is usually elliptical and that the camera-tube system does not have a unique amplitude response. Therefore, a method of computing the geometrical shape of the resolving aperture has been developed using a new test pattern and computer program. MTF (modulation transfer function) theory, the basis for this method, is given. Amplitude response measurements taken from the new test pattern are used to calculate the three parameters which specify resolving power. These three parameters are effective amplitude response, asymmetry ratio, and MTF index. Measurements taken on various camera tubes illustrate the new method and its results.
