- Charles and Mitasik in an earlier SMPTE Journal paper described a computer program that simulates the photographic soundtrack recording and reproducing system. The present paper discusses the application of that program to the design of motion picture soundtrack films. The fundamental characteristics of the program itself are also reviewed. Such a computer program aids in the study of sound films in two ways. First, it facilitates understanding of the characteristics of all the elements in the system. These characteristics must be known quantitatively as well as qualitatively before an effective program can be developed. Second, the simulation program is useful in allowing hypothetical film products to be tested and evaluated without the expense and delay of actually making experimental batches of product. Also discussed is how the computer simulation program can contribute to the design of sound negative films in both of these ways.
