- Abstract
- The next generation of live television is here! Unfortunately, the necessary bandwidth for ultrahigh-definition-television resolution video and higher frame rates for live uncompressed video transport is not. Uncompressed 4K video at 60 frames/s 4:2:2 requires 12 Gbits/s and even more for 4:4:4, which causes a problem for video transport across 10 Gbit/s Ethernet networks. “Lightly compressed” 4K is needed to fit in a single 10 Gbit Ethernet (GbE) cable. For the industry's existing and deployed infrastructure, the compression has to be capable of leveraging the already deployed SMPTE ST 2022-5/6 equipment.1,2 Visually lossless compression for a single 4K stream over a 10 GbE link is also ideal. This paper explores the issues described and suggests the technologies required to fix the problem.

bio
Marc Levy has more 20 years of industry experience in telecommunications and networking. He was introduced to telecommunications as part of a team developing the digital infrastructure for a microwave-based rural telephony system in his native South Africa. He later focused on Ethernet, and has 15 years experience in silicon implementations of high-speed (10G+) Ethernet. Levy was a founder of Octera, a technology startup that was acquired by Macnica in 2011. He now leads Macnica's IP product development in video transport over high-speed networks among other projects. Levy has extensive experience leading engineering teams architecting and developing complex products using leading-edge FPGA technology. He holds a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.Laura Reshetar Richardsonbio
Laura (Reshetar) Richardson is a program manager and business development manager for design service and intellectual property at Macnica Americas, Inc. Before joining Macnica, Richardson served as an officer in the U.S. Navy as a diesel engine inspector. She has more than 13 years of military service to include tours in the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan. She holds a B.S. in political science and a minor in Russian from the United States Naval Academy.Gael Rouvroybio
Gaël Rouvroy is a leading expert in FPGA design specializing in image and video compression, secure and reconfigurable hardware encoders and decoders, cryptographic hardware, block ciphers, DRM, and watermarking. Rouvroy is co-founder and chief technology officer of intoPIX. He holds an electronics and mechanics engineering master's degree and Ph.D. from the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium). He is active in several standardization committees (JPEG, VESA,…) and has presented more than 20 papers on compression, security, watermarking, and design strategies for cost-effective and low-power implementations. - Keyword(s)
