- Abstract
- Live Internet Protocol (IP) flows promise significant benefits in enhancing media-processing flexibility in the broadcast plant. Existing serial digital interface (SDI) formats in use today carry a multiplex of active video, ancillary data, and embedded audio over 75Ω coaxial cable. Although SMPTE ST 2022-6 encapsulates this entire SDI multiplex signal using IP, it is unclear if this is the optimal payload format for a networked broadcast plant. A large amount of wasted space exists within the ancillary area of an SDI signal. Also, system flexibility can be enhanced by placing video, audio, and ancillary data into elementary flows that can be individually and independently switched at the network layer, without the penalty of demultiplexing or remultiplexing the SDI signal. This paper describes a recommendation for the carriage of elementary media flows for live IP production, including mechanisms to describe the logical relationships between these elementary flows for composition and synchronization.

bio
Thomas Edwards is vice president, engineering & development at Fox Networks Engineering & Operations, where he has worked on advanced technology projects such as mobile DTV, 3D, and the Fox network satellite distribution system. Before joining Fox in 2007, he was senior manager, Interconnection Engineering for the PBS Interconnection Replacement Office, where he was responsible for the engineering planning of the PBS Next Generation Interconnection System (NGIS). He also has had significant experience with streaming media production and delivery at the Internet service provider DIGEX and the IP-over-satellite company Cidera. Edwards has contributed to the Report of the SMPTE Task Force on 3D to the Home, the NAB Engineering Handbook, and the SMPTE/EBU/VSF Joint Task Force on Networked Media. He holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, and is a member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) and a SMPTE Fellow.Michael Banybio
Michael Bany is the president of DVBLink, Inc., and has been a consulting network engineer for Fox Sports the past 15 years. While at Fox he has been involved with the engineering and support of their extensive private line video and data network. He has been the chairperson or contributed to various Video Services Forum Activity Groups, including Studio Video over IP, Test and Measurement, SMPTE 2022 over SONET/SDH, Hitless SMPTE 2022, COP3VBR, HBRAV-IP, QoE, etc. Before joining Fox, Bany was a telecommunications engineer with LDDS Worldcom and did Enterprise network consulting for various firms. Bany holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with a minor in computer science from Iowa State University, and is a member of SMPTE and VSF. - Keyword(s)
