Abstract
This paper details recent extensions to the HEVC/H.265 video compression standard, notably the inclusion of higher bit depths, enhanced color sampling, and different types of scalability. It describes the implementation of enhanced HEVC/H.265 encoders that extend the capabilities, performance, and functionalities of previously available encoders. It presents a new set of higher-quality requirements and how those can be satisfied. It explains different types of scalability and how they can be used to facilitate the transition to new services and to increase the functionality of existing ones. The paper concludes with some implementation challenges and shows how to address them.
