Abstract: To paraphrase the ancient Chinese proverb, we are either cursed or blessed by living in interesting times. The traditional concept of “television” is being retired, and video content is now delivered simultaneously to smaller screens (tablets and phones) and larger ones (super-sized LCDs as large as 90 diagonal inches). In the meantime, a combination of excess LCD factory capacity and decreasing worldwide consumer demand has turned the conventional flat screen HDTV into a bargain-priced commodity and a source of unending red ink and misery for some TV manufacturers.

Pete Putman is the president of ROAM Consulting L.L.C. and provides training, marketing, and product testing/ development services to manufacturers, dealers, and end-users of displays, display interfaces, and related connectivity products. — Putman is a contributing editor for Sound and Communications magazine, the leading trade publication for commercial AV systems integrators. He also edits and publishes HDTVexpert.com, a Web blog focused on HDTV, digital media, wireless, and display technologies. Putman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Seton Hall University, and a Master of Science degree in television and film from Syracuse University. He is an InfoComm Senior Academy Instructor for the International Communications Industries Association (ICIA), and was named ICIA's Educator of the Year for 2008. He is a member of both SMPTE and Society for Information Display (SID).
