- The biggest change in video infrastructure is not about video; it's about IT and compute clouds. The persistent conversion of AV-specific gear to all things IT continues. Over the past ten years, file-based production and broadcast workflows have become mature. However, the migration of realtime AV workflows to IT (read Ethernet instead of SDI) has taken a back seat, until now. With the advent of Software Defined Networks and Storage, 10G Ethernet, low latency network switching, compute/desktop virtualization methods and widely available web apps (SaaS model), the complete transition to the “all-IT media facility” is on the horizon.

bio
Al Kovalick has worked in the field of hybrid AV/IT systems for the past 20 years. Previously, he was a digital systems designer and technical strategist for Hewlett-Packard (HP). Following HP, from 1999 to 2004, he was the chief technology officer at Pinnacle Systems. For the next six years he was a Corporate Fellow at Avid. In 2011, Kovalick founded Media Systems Consulting in Santa Clara, CA. — Kovalick is an active speaker, educator, author, and participant with industry bodies, including SMPTE and AMWA. He has presented more than 50 papers at industry conferences worldwide and holds 18 patents. He is the author of the book Video Systems in an IT Environment (2nd ed.). In 2009, Kovalick was awarded the David Sarnoff Medal from SMPTE. He has a BSEE degree from San Jose State University and an MSEE degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
