- Abstract
- For several decades, SMPTE has been leading the way in developing standards for the interconnection of professional media equipment. SMPTE serial digital interfaces such as SMPTE ST 259 for 270 Mbits/sec SDI, SMPTE ST 292-1 for 1.5 Gbits/sec HD-SDI, SMPTE ST 425-1 for 3G-SDI and SMPTE ST 297 for optical interfaces at all three rates have become ubiquitous in the existing production, post-production, and television broadcast plants worldwide. Recently, SMPTE received the 2013 Technology and Engineering Emmy¯ Award for its work on development, standardization, and productization of the HD-SDI interface. SMPTE standards for carrying audio, time code, and other metadata along with the video essence on these interfaces are widely deployed and form the backbone of these facilities today. SMPTE is continuing its lead in developing new interfaces in its current work to standardize 6 Gbits/sec and 12 Gbits/sec electrical and optical serial interfaces for large format and high frame rate signals such as those encountered in 4K and UHDTV formats.
