Abstract: The Archive eXchange Format (AXF) is a new protocol for the storage of files in bulk form in objects that group the files and carry associated metadata in a well-defined manner. AXF Objects abstract storage containers from other system elements, making the same storage containers usable on all generations of all media types. The AXF protocol provides for interchange of AXF Objects and media containing them between archive systems, enabling interchange of such Objects over networks or through physical media transfer and promoting interoperability of such systems. AXF Objects include file systems to establish hierarchical relationships between the files and folders that they contain. They have no limits on the types, numbers, sizes, and relationships of those files and folders. AXF provides for storage of individual objects on multiple media through spanning, for updating of objects through the mechanism of collected sets, and for resilience of storage through use of data structure redundancy and checksums.

S. Merrill Weiss is a consultant in electronic media technology and electronic media technology management. His career spans 47 years in electronic media and related fields, with 38 years in management and consulting. He has been involved in development of SMPTE standards for 37 years, participating in work on nearly all of the digital technologies with which the Society has been involved. Weiss has been a Working Group or Technology Committee chair for the past 32 years and a member of the Standards Committee for 26 years. He also has served four years as the SMPTE Engineering Director for Television and was co-chair of the joint SMPTE/EBU Task Force for Harmonized Standards for the Exchange of Program Material as Bit Streams. Weiss is a SMPTE Fellow and received the David Sarnoff Gold Medal Award in 1995 and the Progress Medal in 2005. He received the NAB Television Engineering Achievement Award in 2006 and the ATSC Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Contributor Award in 2012. He won the IEEE BTS Matti S. Siukola Memorial Award in both 2012 and 2013. Weiss holds four issued US patents and two international patents. He is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
