- Abstract
- File-based production workflows, especially time-critical news contributions, suffer from long data transfer times when files need to be exchanged over wide area networks (WAN). On one hand, standard tools like the file transfer protocol (FTP) are based on the transmission control protocol and suffer massively from WAN characteristics. On the other hand, typical WAN file transfer acceleration solutions require installation of additional proprietary software, resulting in changed workflows with significant user impact and integration effort. To compensate for these drawbacks, a novel approach for accelerating workflows without any user impact and virtually zero integration effort has been implemented and is introduced here. Different FTP-based transfer scenarios will be analyzed with a focus on the end-to-end performance gain. — Detailed results from a real-life scenario involving an international news contribution for a public broadcaster will be presented and reveal significant performance gain on the involved 8 Mbit/sec WAN link as well as on multi-gigabit links, without adapting or replacing the established production system.
