- Abstract
- The information technology (IT) industry has, for several years, embraced the cloud as a viable means of transforming the technical infrastructures of its businesses. One of the key advantages has been the ability for cloud computing to migrate from a capital expense (capex) funding model for IT infrastructure to an operating expense (opex) model. This move to a “pay as you go” model has helped organizations improve their financials and mitigate risk. The media and entertainment (M&E) industry, has been slow to the game, but is finally looking seriously at how to leverage the Cloud. This may be at least in part due to the fact that M&E operations typically fall outside the domain of IT, an area which has much more exposure and experience with the many benefits offered by the cloud. There are also additional challenges around media, including content security, the cost of bandwidth and storage to migrate and archive high-resolution video content, and the need for bulletproof reliability, frame accuracy, “media awareness.” This paper addresses some of the key components of media workflow and discusses the advantages and viability of moving those components into the Cloud—whether private, public, or hybrid.
