Abstract: In 2013, video transport over Internet Protocol (IP) networks continues to flourish throughout the broadcast industry for all types of live and real-time programming. IP technology for delivering video to viewers has matured, using the public Internet to stream all types of content to devices via both hardwired and mobile connections. The popularity of this medium was demonstrated by the 8 million viewers who watched live video coverage via IP streaming of Felix Baumgartner parachute from an altitude of 127,000 ft, as well as the observation that Netflix and YouTube comprise approximately one-half of the world's Internet traffic. However, IP is also increasingly being used farther up the professional broadcast production chain, even going so far as to extend all the way to the camera and thus eliminate the need for SDI interfaces and cabling.

Wes Simpson is president of Telecom Product Consulting, which he founded in 2000 to provide highquality research, marketing, business development, training and product management services to companies wishing to capitalize on the expanding market for high performance video telecommunication products and services. Simpson is a frequent television industry speaker at events such as VidTrans, SMPTE, NAB, and IBC, and he is a regular columnist for TV Technology. Recently, Simpson has developed and delivered well-received training seminars for the VSF, the IEEE BTS, and SMPTE's Regional Seminars. He has written two books, which have both been released as second editions by Focal Press: “IPTV and Internet Video” in 2009 and “Video Over IP” in 2008. Simpson has more than 30 years of experience in the design, development, and marketing of products for video and telecommunication applications. He holds a BSEE from Clarkson University and an MBA from the University of Rochester.
Steve Storozum
bio
Steve Storozum has more than 30 years of experience in telecom and video products and services. He earned an A.B. in physics from Washington University, St. Louis; an M.S.E.E. from Carnegie Mellon University; and pursued a Ph. D. in electrical engineering at Virginia Tech. He is currently with Level 3 Communications where he supports the network engineering needs of clients in Media and Entertainment markets. Before Level 3, Storozum held senior marketing, business development, and engineering positions at telecom, datacom, and video equipment suppliers. He is a senior member of the IEEE and is former president and current board member of the Video Services Forum. Throughout his career, he has also contributed to development of television, networking, and digital cinema standards through SMPTE and IEEE. Storozum has presented numerous talks at industry conferences and has contributed articles on datacom, video, and optical communications to various publications and websites.
