- Abstract
- The overall challenge of media enterprises is to provide high-quality content for media consumption on every device at any time. High quality in this context means not only a good story but also high technical quality—adapted to the capabilities of the presentation device. Technical quality of content thus becomes an important factor of competition. It is often a painful process to learn that convergence between IT and traditional media technologies will only lead to increased efficiency (more programs at the same or less costs) if an organization conducts a significant change effort. In most cases, when the phrase is used, organizations have to change their “organizational DNA.” This includes managerial restructuring and a change of creative mind-sets (e.g., a journalist produces for radio, TV, and online). New business processes and workflows are then defined and supported by new technical architectures often comprised of several subsystems. Interoperability between these sub-systems is usually granted through standards—one of the core competences of SMPTE.
