Abstract: Have you wondered why movie sound varies, depending on the theater in which you see the film? Those of us in movie sound production also wonder why movie sound quality is inconsistent, even though there are SMPTE Standards and Recommended Practices aimed at minimizing variations.

Brian Vessa is an audio professional with more than 35 years of experience. After attending UCLA Engineering School he became a recording engineer, producing albums and recording orchestras. He was known for hot-rodding studio gear. Vessa transitioned into film post as a music editor and sound editor, became a rerecording mixer at Cannon Films and MGM, then handled audio restoration at NT Audio. He was hired by Sony Pictures in 1998, and is now the company's executive director of digital audio mastering and representative to DCI. Vessa is a member of the Academy Sound Branch, SMPTE and the Audio Engineering Society. He chairs TC-25CSS (Cinema Sound Systems-formerly the SMPTE B-Chain Study Group) as well as D-Cinema and IMF AHG's. He has written many audio specifications, including a white paper on near-field mixing for home theater that has been widely adopted. Vessa enjoys recording jazz, rock, and mixing live sound. He is a drummer and keyboardist in the LA area, an avid backpacker and an award-winning home wine and beer maker.
David J. Weinberg

David J. Weinberg is an engineering consultant and technology journalist on audio, video and film technology. He provides audio and home theater engineering consultation and professional location digital audio recording services to companies, radio stations and individuals. He brings to his work an MSEE, a First Class Radiotelephone license, and five decades of continued study and active involvement in the audio, video and computer industries. He is Chair of the Audio Engineering Society's DC section, and a Manager in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers' DC section. Weinberg has authored articles on various aspects of audio for video and film, is Technical Editor of audioXpress (www.audioXpress.com), and serves as Membership Officer for the Boston Audio Society (www.BostonAudioSociety.org) and Editor of its journal, The B A S Speaker.
