- Abstract
- As the roll-out of Digital Cinema continues, the widespread deployment of Hearing Accessible Technology (“HAT”) has begun. Not only those with hearing loss or the deaf (DHH), but blind and low vision patrons (VI) will have unprecedented access to the Big Screen Experience, thanks to digital technology. On the positive side, a variety of cutting-edge advancements, and defining milestones in television, movies and internet capabilities have now coalesced into a diverse and emerging world of accessible technology in digital. This article will provide some history on accessibility, some facts and information about the deaf and hearing loss communities that can be tapped by the motion picture exhibitors, the current technologies supporting theaters today, and will also look at the challenges that remain with both streamlining the many accessibility options that have emerged and marketing to these communities.
