Abstract: For years, advances in professional video displays trickled down into the world of consumer electronics. That's all changed now, as advances in display technology now “trickle up” to professional lines from the consumer world. One such feature is the High-Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI. This copy-protected video/audio/data interface, originally intended to connect televisions to Blu-ray players and settop boxes, is now standard on cameras, monitors, and other professional equipment and has created myriad switching and distribution headaches. Other display interfaces, such as DisplayPort, are evolving into “multifunction” ports that carry video, audio, data, Ethernet, serial device control, and even high-speed serial data. Alternately, all of these functions are being combined with HDMI into structured wire interfaces (HDBaseT).

Peter Putman is the president of ROAM Consulting LLC, which provides training, marketing communications, and product testing/development services to manufacturers, dealers, and end-users of displays, display interfaces, and related products. Putman edits and publishes HDTVexpert.com, a web blog focused on digital TV, HDTV, and display technologies. He is also a columnist for Pro AV magazine, the leading trade publication for commercial AV systems integrators. — Putman holds a B.A. degree in communications from Seton Hall University, and a M.S. degree in television and film from Syracuse University. He is a Senior Academy Instructor for the International Communications Industries Association (ICIA), and was named ICIA's Educator of the Year in 2008. Putman is a member of SMPTE and the Society for Information Display (SID). Additionally, he holds industry certifications from ICIA (Certified Technology Specialist) and the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF).
