Abstract: Innovation in the consumer electronics industry continues apace, especially anything mobile, portable, or Internet-connected. Entertainment is still a huge factor in consumer spending, though less directed toward television purchasing now that HDTV penetration is relatively high. The social responsibility topics of energy efficiency and accessibility occupy an increasing portion of CEA standards activity. Televisions are now required to post an energy guide label at retail, similar to that used on appliances, conveying annual electricity consumption. Passage of the Communications and Video Accessibility Act (CVAA) late last year will impact pretty much everyone in the video creation, distribution and delivery business. Most relevant standards developing organizations, including CEA and SMPTE, already have standards projects under way or completed that relate directly to needs derived from the CVAA. CEA expects that more standards will be required as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) works its way through the CVAA's defined implementation timeline.
