- Abstract
- The 31FS File Formats and Systems technology committee oversees the definition of common wrapper structure, file formats, and file systems for the storage, transmission, and management of digital media file components. The output documents are standards, engineering guidelines, and other specifications that use technologies such as Material Exchange Format (MXF), General Exchange Format (GXF), Digital Picture Exchange (DPX), Extensible Markup Language (XML) and other widely used formats in the industry.

He has been involved in standardization efforts for several years both at SMPTE and MPEG where he participated in the development of MPEG-7 and MPEG-21. — His research interests include distributed systems and the applicability of SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) to broadcast and post-production workflows. Santos holds a degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Porto.Karen Broomebio
Karen Broome is manager, technology standards, at Sony Electronics. Based in Hollywood, she is co-chair of the SMPTE 31FS Files and Structures Technical Committee, chair of the SMPTE 30MR10 Metadata Definition Working Group, and chair of the SMPTE 3D Home Master Metadata Ad Hoc Group. She works in Sony's U.S. Technology Standards Office on multimedia content file format and metadata standardization activities, focusing on the Material Exchange Format (MXF) and various data formats for consumer and professional cameras. She is also an invited expert to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Metadata and Containers Committee. In addition to her work in the motion picture industry, Broome serves on the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to the IEC TC100 as a subject matter expert on e-books and the EPUB file format. Broome works on the ongoing maintenance of various language identification codesets, participating in two revisions of the RFC defining xml:lang (IETF BCP47).
