Abstract: In his introduction to the April 2010 issue of the Journal, which also focused on Audio, Tom Scott noted the “evil twins” of “uneven audio loudness and loss of lip sync.” While, as he predicted, these problems are still with us, there is good news on both topics. In addition, in this issue we'll examine “yet another” digital audio issue: “pops and clicks.”

Pat Waddell is a 30-year veteran of the broadcasting industry. He is a SMPTE Fellow and is currently the Chair of the ATSC's TSG/S66, the Specialist Group on Video/Audio Coding (which includes loudness). He was the founding Chair of SMPTE 32NF, the Technology Committee on Network/Facilities Infrastructure, as well as representing Harmonic at a number of industry standards bodies, including SCTE, DVB, SMPTE, and the ATSC. Waddell is active in the development of 3D TV standards within SCTE, DVB, and SMPTE. He is the 2010 recipient of the ATSC's Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Contributor Award.
