- Abstract
- For existing MPEG-2–based wireless high-definition television (HDTV) cameras, latency and picture quality are major issues, and swift improvement are urgently needed. Therefore, as a solution, Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) developed a wireless HDTV camera integrated with an ultra-low-delay H.264 encoder. By installing a board-type ultra- low-delay H.264 encoder into a compact-type orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) microwave transmitter, 10 msec latency and twice the compression efficiency were achieved. As a result, a wireless HDTV camera will operate in the same way as a wired HDTV camera, and no special treatment will be needed. Contribution to various HDTV programs is greatly expected for this ultra-low-delay H.264- based wireless HDTV camera. In this article, a detailed explanation of the technology and operation of this camera is presented.
