Abstract: The mass digitization of analog archive holdings and the transition to tapeless production for new content mean that audiovisual (AV) archives now face the prospect of file-based archiving solutions using information technology (IT) storage methods. However, many important factors in this process remain unknown. What is the long-term total cost of ownership (TCO) of these systems, which file formats should be used, what storage technologies make sense, what are the risks involved, what is the additional cost of managing these risks, and what new software approaches can be applied? These issues are being explored by major broadcasters, national archives, and technology specialists in the PrestoPrime and AVATAR-m projects.

Matthew Addis leads a diverse portfolio of collaborative applied research projects at the University of Southampton IT Innovation, including media archiving and digital preservation, risk management in online communities, and smart laboratory systems to name a few. Addis currently works on cost models, uncertainty and service-oriented approaches to distributed systems. He has spent more than ten years working closely with broadcasters, post houses, and film archives to develop strategies, models, tools and systems for audiovisual restoration, preservation, and archiving. Through projects including AVATAR-m in the U.K. and PrestoPRIME in Europe, Addis has investigated the “cost of risk of loss” for long-term data retention and access when using ICT systems and has developed related strategies for data integrity management, file format migration, and archiving as a service.

bio
Richard Wright's background in computer science and signal processing led to his current position as Technology Manager of BBC Archives, which he has held since 1994. For the past four years he has been involved in PrestoSpace, an EU-funded project aiming to provide technical solutions for digital preservation of audiovisual collections. Through PrestoSpace, Wright has championed the needs of underfunded audiovisual archives, developing the preservation factory concept to enable commercial providers to work with these archives on mutually beneficial terms. Wright continually pushes for greater accessibility to digital resources and as such is particularly interested in developments in creative commons licensing and open source technologies.
R. Weerakkody
bio
Rajitha Weerakkody is a research technologist at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) (R&D), focusing on the digital preservation of audiovisual archives. Weerakkody obtained his PhD in multimedia and digital signal processing (distributed video coding) from the University of Surrey, U.K. He has experience and interests in video coding and compression, error control coding, digital signal processing, digital storage systems for data archiving, digital preservation technologies, telecommunications, and wireless communications.
