Inclusivity, Sustainability, Creativity, and Savings: Advocating for Accelerated Adoption of Remote Integration Models

Abstract
For decades, the production and distribution of large-scale live content has relied on compounds comprised of broadcast trucks, connectivity infrastructure, and small armies of production personnel on-site at the event's location. With advancements in IP connectivity and other production technologies, the viability of remote production workflows has become apparent. Utilizing these Remote Integration Model (REMI) workflows significantly reduces the need for, and size of, the on-site production footprint. While some companies aggressively invest in these workflows, the shift towards significant REMI implementation needs to move faster. The environmental and financial benefits, improved consumer experience, and positive human impact on the workforce are too favorable to delay. REMI implementation can ultimately enable viewers to have more premium and consistent experiences. In the legacy model, every on-site truck or compound has varying physical properties. Relocating personnel, systems, and workflows from on-site compounds to centralized production facilities vastly improves stability and predictability, reducing the time spent setting up and acclimating to on-site environments. Minimizing time spent traveling, setting up, and troubleshooting affords time to refine the look, sound, and feel of the content, driving innovation. The positive environmental and financial impacts of remote production workflows are considerable, including reducing the need for trucks traveling to on-site compounds and reducing air travel for thousands of production personnel who operate those compounds. Meaningful REMI implementation across the industry could reduce CO 2 emissions by tens of thousands of metric tons - comparable to the complete removal of thousands of passenger vehicles per year - while saving large organizations tens of millions yearly in travel, transportation, and rental expenses. The legacy production model has broadly leveraged a workforce of freelancers who have spent significant portions of their careers on the road. While some on-site presence will always be necessary, REMI implementation would enable a considerable portion of that workforce to live and work in cities with centralized facilities. This would afford personnel more work-life stability and open pathways for more inclusive talent pipelines, training opportunities, and socio-demographic and physical accessibility. Rarely do emerging workflows offer a path to simultaneously improve consumer experience, reduce production costs, enhance employee well-being, and positively impact environmental sustainability. If these benefits are to be realized fully, they must be part of the conversation and part of the investment from the start. This paper features insights from industry experts who have experienced REMI's benefits firsthand, exploring why it is crucial to advance REMI implementation - with an intentional focus on these four areas - across the industry.
