- Abstract
- It has been two and a half decades since the first commercial digital cinema appeared. A combination of various technologies - digital image compression, digital projection, storage and transmission technologies, which together make up what is called Digital Cinema, allowing feature films to be shown in digital format in theaters with quality comparable to that of traditional 35 mm film releases. Despite the development of digital technologies, Digital Cinemas continue to operate as standalone entities, with limited connectivity to external networks such as the Internet. In recent years, however, the audiovisual world has been rapidly moving towards IP technologies. Data transmission and device management technologies have been integrated into nearly all segments of the audiovisual industry, including television broadcasting, media content production, online video services, and Pro AV - audiovisual solutions for concerts, events, conferences, installations, etc. Even though different protocols are used in different media industry segments, most solutions today increasingly rely on open NMOS specifications developed by the AMWA community for device management. The implementation of open AMWA NMOS specifications in the cinema industry can become the basis for the introduction of the Digital Cinema 2.0 concept as the next generation of Digital Cinema.
