Abstract: This paper intends to give a view on the major tracks presently considered in France on the way to the future of broadcastinq systems. The main research laboratory active in this field, CCETT, will first be presented. Then, some general considerations will be introduced on the way the broadcastinq system is evolving, on the present situation in Europe and on the directions which, in our view, have to be explored prioritarily. Some of the research programs undertaken at CCETT on these main axes will finally be outlined.

Jacques Sabatier was born in 1946 and is a graduate of Ecole Polytechnique (1966) and Ecole Nationale des Télécommunications (1971). In 1971, he joined the research department of the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française (ORTF). In 1972, he moved to the Centre Commun d'Etudes de Télévision et de Télécommunications (CCETT) in Rennes where he managed several research activities on picture coding and transmission, image processing, and picture quality evaluations. From 1980 to 1983, as an assistant manager of Télédiffusion de France Laboratories in CCETT, he contributed to the satellite broadcasting research program, to the smart card development, and to cable networks research activity. In October 1983 he was appointed director of the CCETT. He is presently chairman of the EBU Sub-Group VI dealing with television coding and HDTV systems. He is a member of the French delegation to CCIR Study Group II.

Jacques Poncin graduated from Ecole Polytechinque and Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications. He started his professional life in the late 60s in the Centre National d‘ Etudes des Telecommunications (CNET). He worked on several projects in sound, speech, and picture coding. In 1972 he moved to the Centre Commun d' Etudes de Tele diffusion et Telecommunications (CCETT), where he has been in charge of a research department on digital television coding for transmission and production purposes. At that time he was a member of EBU working parties and took part in CCIR standardization study groups. In 1980 he was appointed head of a division covering several research departments such as subjective evaluation of pictures, picture coding, CATV services, packet switchers and local area networks. In 1983 he was appointed assistant director of the CCETT.
