- Abstract
- Plans for domestic satellite broadcasting (DBS) in the 12 GHz band in Europe are well advanced. Services using the MAC-packet transmission standard adopted in Europe will commence this year. Over the next three years, a number of national satellites will be launched and there is the likelihood of additional pan-European services. Though it had been thought that implementation of high definition television was some way in the future, this highly competitive programme environment will spur the introduction of a higher definition television service suitable for large, wide aspect-ratio screens with stereo sound. An important feature of this evolution is the capability of the MAC-packet system to deliver this new form of television, while providing conventional pictures to existing receivers.

bio
John R. Forrest obtained his B.A. degree in Electrical Sciences in 1964 at Cambridge University. His postgraduate work for the D.Phil. degree was at Oxford University on the topic of Plasma Diagnostics for Nuclear Fusion. Between 1967 and 1970 he was at Stanford University, Calif., as a resarch assistant and lecturer. In 1970 he returned to take up a post at University College, London, becoming professor of electronic engineering in 1982. His research group concentrated its activities on new techniques in radar and satellite communication systems, particularly involving microwaves and optics. In 1984 he became technical director of Marconi Defense Systems, but left in 1986 to join the broadcasting world as director of engineering at the Independent Broadcasting Authority. He is Deputy Chairman of the IEE Electronics Div. and a senior member of the IEEE. In 1985 he was elected to the Fellowship of Engineering. - Copyright
