Abstract
The choice of the MII format for use at NBC and the reasons which led up to the choice are discussed. The format and the initial specifications are reviewed. The product line is described, and recent installations for network delay and News operations are detailed. Planned installations for VT Operations and future applications, including automation, are also addressed.

Steven Bonica is vice-president of engineering at the National Broadcasting Co. (NBC). Prior to assuming his current position, he was director, broadcast systems engineering. Prior to that, he served as manager and then director of videotape operations, network news. Mr. Bonica has been with NBC for his entire professional career. In January 1969, he began in the News Film Dept. as an editing room assistant and later became an assistant film editor, then film editor. During his seven years in news film, his editing assignments took him to Europe, South America, Russia, Africa, and Southeast Asia. In 1976, he became a videotape engineer in the Engineering Dept. Later that year, he moved to the Electronic Journalism Dept., as videotape editor. Mr. Bonica was a supervisor when he left E.J. in 1980 to rejoin the News Dept. as a technical planning manager. One of his responsibilities in that position was the organization and supervision of videotape operations for both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.
