Abstract
More than 30 years have elapsed since TV broadcasting service began in major countries under the current TV standard format. An HOTV is expected to form the new TV system of the next generation. System concepts and basic equipment are being developed for HDTV by many organizations.

Yoshizumi Eto received his B.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees both from Tokyo University in 1966 and 1977 respectively. Since joining Central Research Laboratory of Hitachi, Ltd., he has been engaged in the developing of home VTRs, TV cameras, facsimile modems and digital TV equipments. Currently, he is a senior researcher of the 5th department in his laboratory, managing the research activities for future digital video recording technologies.

Masuo Umemoto received his B.S.E.E. degree from Kyoto Technical University in 1969. Since joining Central Research Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd. in 1969, he has been engaged in the research activities for magnetic video recording.

Seiichi Mita received his B.S.E.E. and M.S.E.E. degress both from Kyoto University in 1970 and 1972 respectively. Since joining Central Research Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd. in 1972, he has been engaged in research activities for digital video recording.

Shusaku Nagahara received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Electro-Communication, Tokyo, Japan, in 1957. From 1957 to 1972 he was with Nippon Columbia Company, Tokyo, Japan. Since 1972, he has been with the Central Research Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd., Tokyo, Japan. He has specialized in the spatial color encoding one-pickup devices and has been associated with most phases of their development. He is a Senior Researcher supervising a camera and video-recording research unit.
