Abstract
In 1982, Hitachi Denshi developed a highly compact portable combined camera/VTR system utilizing the 1/4ʺ format that was well suited for ENG applications. Shortly thereafter, an effort to standardize the 1/4ʺ small format VTR was made by the SMPTE.2,3 However, the effort ended without success due to user anxiety about metal tape, etc.
