Abstract: An important criterion in the procurement of new equipment is availability (A). In approximate terms, the following applies: <tex>${\rm A}=1-({\rm MTTR}/{\rm MTBF})$</tex> MTBF stands for Mean Time Between Failure, while MTTR stands for Mean Time to Repair.

Dr. Rolf Hedtke was born in Bad Hersfeld, Germany, in 1949. He received the “Diplom-Engineer” degree in science of communication from the “Technische Hochschule Darmstadt” in 1974. The next 5 years he was assistant professor at the institute of data processing where he was involved with basic researches in highly reliable computer systems. In 1979 he received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and joined Bosch-Fernseh in the same year. Here he was responsible for the development of control systems for magnetic video tape recorders. Since 1985 he is project manager of the digital television tape recorder.
