Abstract
The major part of this paper describes some historical background to the D-1 format, the basic concepts employed and supporting technical information. The remaining part describes possible scanner configurations proposed by different manufacturers as practical implementions of the D-1 recording format.

bio
Takeo Eguchi joined Sony Corporation in 1967 after graduating from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology where he received B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. Since 1978 he has been involved in the development of the digital VTR in Sony. He is a Fellow Member of the SMPTE and is presently chairing the Ad-Hoc Group and Tape Format and Mechanism of the Working Group of the Digital Television Tape Recording.
