Abstract
The introduction of HDTV in Europe is being considered primarily for new services which are using, the MAC transmission standard. The MAC system offers significant advantages over present composite systems for compatible HDTV, especially in its inherent dual aspect ratio specification. The Eureka HDTV project is developing an HDTV production and transmission system based on a 50 Hz field rate and on MAC. A European HDTV launch is planned for 1992. However, widescreen services may be available to the public before that date by using an Enhanced Television (ETV) approach.

John Forrest graduated from Cambridge University in 1964, then carried out research on controlled nuclear fusion at Oxford University until 1967. He continued work as a research associate and lecturer at the Institute for Plasma Research, Stanford University, California, until 1970. Following this period in the U S., he returned to University College London as a lecturer in the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department and was appointed to a Chair in 1982. After a number of years as a consultant to GEC, he left University College London in 1984 to take up the position of Technical Director at Marconi Defence Systems Ltd. Two years later, in 1986, he moved into the world of broadcast engineering as Director of Engineering to the Independent Broadcasting Authority. He was elected to the Fellowship of Engineering in 1985 and takes a keen interest in a wide range of national and international engineering matters.

Gary Tonge has been head of Engineering Secretariat at IBA since 1987. Between 1987 and 1980 he had various posts in IBA's Experimental & Development Department working on image processing HDTV. He received a B.S. degree in electronics and a Ph.D. in applied math.
