Abstract
Considerable discussion has taken place regarding the HDTV plant of the future. Included in this discussion is the topic of compression and the need for a compression hierarchy. What needs to be discussed is the development of this hierarchy from the point of view of the users, that is the broadcast, cable, and related industries. A Compression Hierarchy is proposed and discussed in a practical setting.
