- It has often been the case in the past, when people talk about digital video tape recorders, that they concentrate their attention on the problems of high bit rates and packing densities, on the niceties of idfferent channel coding and have completely forgotten probably the most important carrier of infomation, the sound channel.

John L. E. Baldwin, a Member of the Institute of Physics and a Fellow of the Royal Television Society, joined the Independent Broadcasting Authority in 1967. After the introduction of 625 lines and color in Independent Television, he became interested in digital processing of the video signal. His leadership in Digital Intercontinental Conversion Equipment (DICE) was recognised internationally when he received the David Sarnoff Gold Medal from the SMPTE in 1975, and the Achievement Gold Medal of the Montreux International Television Symposium in 1977. - Copyright
