Abstract: The wide screen, high-definition television aims to present a more attractive and improved impression of “realism” to the viewers and to satisfy the demands of the coming video generation for a crisper picture with higher resolution.

Eiichi Taira received the BSEE degree in 1965 from the Kyushu institute of Technology, Fukuoka, Japan. In April 1965, he joined the Television Divison of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., where he has been engaged in various developments in the field of color television receivers, such as circuit design and integrated circuit development. He is presently a manager of the High-Definition Television development group in the Television Division. He is a member of the Institute of Television Engineers of Japan, and the Information Processing Society of Japan.

Minoru Takeda is an Advanced TV Systems Manager in the Electronics Research Laboratory of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. Since joining Matsushita in I960, he has contributed to the development of conventional TV receivers; digital processing equipment; VTRs; high-definition TV receivers, cameras, and transmission equipments; and related systems.
