Abstract
For many years Television Broadcasters have recognized the potential benefits of some degree of automated operation within the TV station, and in particular automation of the Master Control operation which assembles the final output of the station to be sent to the transmitter.

Peter Symes was born in Chester, England, and graduated in 1967 from the University College of North Wales, Bangor, with the degree of B.Sc. in Electronic Engineering. From 1967 to 1973 he was employed by the Studio Capital Projects Department of the British Broadcasting Corporation, working on the planning and installation of television studios and central areas. In 1973 he joined Pye TVT Limited of Cambridge, England, as an Area Manager for studio equipment. After becoming greatly involved in sales engineering for the products of Central Dynamics, he was appointed CDL Product Manager with Pye TVT. In 1976 he emigrated to Canada to join Central Dynamics as Assistant Director, and subsequently Director, of International Marketing. Symes is currently Director of Product Planning for Central Dynamics, but also has specific responsibilities as Product Manager, Automation Systems.
