Abstract: The need to remote control equipment has existed for many years. The old methods of parallel multiple wire remote control are becoming unsatisfactory for the modern television plant. The use of standard serial data communications systems allows for improved operation with reduced complexity in wiring and operation.

Marc Walker received a BSEE degree in 1973, and an MSEE degree in 1980 from the University of Utah. He is currently manager of Switcher and Machine Control Design for Fernseh Inc. (formerly TeleMation) where he has been employed since 1972. Prior to this he worked at KID-TV for two years, and KCPX-TV for four and one half years. He is a member of the SMPTE Working Group for Standardization of Digital Control of Television Equipment. He is also a member of IEEE.
