Abstract
Although the audio tracks on the SMPTE and EBU Type C formats are only .031 inches wide compared with .070 inches wide on the 2-inch quadruplex format the audio performance of Type C format video tape recorders exceeds that of quadruplex machines. At first it would appear that the narrower track width used on the Type C format would result in an audio signal-to-noise ratio inferior to that obtained on quadruplex recorders, but this is not the case. Because the video tracks are slanted at an acute angle along the tape, the magnetic particle orientation of one-inch videotape is made longitudinal to favor the video performance. This proves of considerable benefit as far as the audio performance is concerned. The use of narrow audio tracks allows three or four (EBU format C option III) high quality audio channels to be recorded on one- inch wide videotape. This permits greater flexibility of operation and cuts down on capital equipment costs for such items as separate open reel audio recorders and machine synchronizers which would otherwise be required.

Martin A. Lilley graduated from Northampton College, London. In 1963 he joined the Operational Services Group of the Marconi Company to install television studio equipment worldwide. In 1968, he joined Ampex World Operations S.A. in Hong Kong with responsibility for the installation and commissioning of the Ampex Video Tape Recorders throughout most of Asia. In 1976, as Engineering Manager, he designed specialized computer interfaces for the A VR-1 and ACR-25 recorders and an automated Audio- Video switcher/dissolver for use with the Ampex RA-4000 Editing System. In 1978, he transferred to Sustaining Engineering Group in Audio-Video Systems Division of Ampex Corp. and designed the signal system section of the VPR-1C (PAL) modification kit. He also worked on the AVR-3 quadruplex recorder and designed a 7.8-kHz error corrector for the PAL version of the velocity compensator to reduce last line errors. Mr. Lilley was appointed Project Engineer for the VPR-2B and VPR-20 One-Inch Type “C” Format Recorders in December 1980. In 1981, he made extensive changes to the EBU four-channel version of the VPR-2B to improve EBU audio parameters and A3/A4 crosstalk cancellation.
