Abstract: The rapid proliferation of computer graphics systems, designed to aid the short-turnaround production of both static and animated short-burst graphics for video has taken place with a simultaneous burst of impossibly high expectations, confusion and general bewilderment at what these systems really do.

Peter Black is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin (Madison), and won an MA in Southeast Asian Languages and Literature at the University of California (Berkeley) in 1975. He has worked as a nationally syndicated radio broadcaster (Earth News Radio), and consulted to parties ranging from former Governor Jerry Brown to the Xerox Corp. on high-technology issues. In 1979 he started Xiphias, a company now widely recognized for its contribution to broadcast-oriented computer graphics software systems. Mr. Black is a recognized expert in the area of computer graphics systems for television.
