New Chrominance and Luminance Components for Multiplexed Component Video Signals in HDTV Systems

Abstract
In the design of any new color television system, the choice of the luminance signal equation and of the two color difference components to be used is important. It would be worthwhile to carefully consider alternatives to the classic NTSC equations as the new system is almost certain to be based upon time division multiplexed chrominance and luminance components and not on a composite signal. It is important also to note that the NTSC system was developed before the invention of the video tape recorder or the concept of satellite transmission, both of which use, and will continue to use, FM with its triangular noise spectrum. It will be wise to take into consideration the effects of transmission noise in choosing both the luminance equation and the color difference components.

Charles W. Rhodes was born in Buffalo, New York in 1929. He attended the University of California, Berkeley from 1947 to 1950. In 1954 he joined the CBS-Columbia Divison of CBS Broadcasting, as a Field Engineer. From 1956 to 1982 he was employed at Tektronix, most recently as Chief Engineer, TV Products, Communications Division. He holds seven U.S. patents on TV measurement technology and is chairman of EIA, TR 4.4 (Video): a Fellow of SMPTE (1972): and a Fellow of IEEE (1980). In August, 1982 Mr. Rhodes joined Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. as Principal Engineer, Corporate Staff, and reports to Dr. Guy W. Beakley, Vice-President Research and Development.
