- Abstract
- An experimental digital component video production facility has been installed at the studios of Thames Television, London. This project has been managed by the ITV Association and is the culmination of several years co-operation between the ITV Technical Development Laboratories and specialist UK manufacturers of broadcast equipments. The facility has been designed to CCIR Recommendations and is currently in use for assessing engineering operations and also studio and post-production programmes. The paper reviews the equipment and facilities offered, highlights some of the difficulties encountered during design and installation, and discusses the potential role of a digital production facility within a Broadcasting organisation.

bio
Chris Dalton graduated from Bristol University in 1960 and joined the BBC, where he was concerned with research in optics, colorimetry, and camera and film source origination. He later specialized in signal processing and was responsible for the development of Sound-in-Syncs and the first operational digital standards conversion equipment. In 1987 he became technical director of a new company and introduced a PAL decoding component frame synchronizer. Since 1982 Chris has been supervisor of the ITV Association Technical Development Laboratory situated at Thames Television, where he has been involved in colorimetry, analogue component systems, and the development of an experimental digital production facility.Norman W. GreenIndependent Television Association London, United Kingdombio
Norman Green joined EMI research laboratory in 1956 as a research student and was concerned with research into microwave links, character recognition and slow scan television for space research and radar projects. In 1962 he moved to the Central Research Department of the Rank organization, working on high-speed compute printers and fiber optics communications using lasers. Norman joined ABC Television in 1965, working on the development of color television and subsequently the use of digital techniques in TV studios. In 1973 he joined ITCA, now the ITV Association, where as head of engineering services he is responsible for the management of the ITV studio technical development program. - Copyright
