Abstract
Multiple generation copies of video tape recordings are, even today, still subject to considerable reductions in quality. At the present time, it is difficult to forsee any progress being made in the tape, head and amplifier fields which will bring about any noticable improvement, as long as the analogue, FM recording method is retained.

Hubert Foerster was born in 1925. He received the M. Sc. degree from the University of Darmstadt. He joined Bosch-Fernseh in 1955 as a development engineer for measurement equipment. Since 1960 he has been involved with the development of electronics in video recording. He has been Head of the VTR Electronics Dept. at Bosch-Fernseh since 1970.

Josef Sochor was born in Reichenbach (now in the German Democratic Republic) on 10 June 1944. From 1961 to 1966 he studied at the Technical Universities of Prague and Leningrad, leading to an M. A. degree in Electronic Engineering. From 1967 to 1969 he worked for the Research Department for Telecommunications in Prague – on PCM telephone transmission. Mr. Sochor has been with Bosch-Fernseh in Darmstadt since 1969, involved in development work on videotape recording. Since 1978 he has been Head of the laboratory for Digital Video Tape Recording at Bosch-Fernseh.
