Abstract: This paper attempts to analyze the North American consumer's reaction to Teletext. A forecast is required since a consumer teletext system has not yet been implemented in North America. While Teletext has many potential categories of users and can be implemented in many different ways, this paper will concentrate on broadcast teletext as an ancillary service for consumers. The analysis is based on considerations of technical feasibility and the constraints imposed by consumer behavior. The results of this analysis have important implications on system design.

Dr. Walter Ciciora is Section Manager of Video Processing, Advanced Development at Zenith Radio Corp. in Glenview, Ill. He has been with Zenith for ten years. Dr. Ciciora holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, awarded in June, 1969. His M.S. and B.S. are also from IIT. He has an MBA from the University of Chicago awarded in 1979. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a member of the Consumer Electronics group Administrative Committee, and was Chairman of the 1977 Chicago Spring Conference. Also, he is a member of the SMPTE, AES, and Tau Beta Pi. He has taught Electrical Engineering in the Evening Division of IIT for seven years. He has been awarded four patents and has several pending.
