- Abstract
- The distribution system for network television signals involves the tandem connection of many different transmission systems, all of which presently operate using analog techniques. During the 1980's, the common carriers will install many digital transmission systems so as to realize the maximum economic benefit from digital switching machines. As a consequence it is virtually certain that by 1990 some, if not most, of the distribution system for network television signals will involve the use of digital transmission techniques. The present situation regarding digital transmission of television signals in North America is reviewed and some areas of concern are noted. There is an obvious need for close liaison between the broadcaster, the common carriers, the manufacturers and the regulatory authorities if the present quality of the distribution system is to be maintained.

bio
Denis J. Connor was educated at the University of British Columbia, receiving a B.A.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1963, an M.A.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1965, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1969. In his graduate work Dr. Connor developed a special purpose computer, based on a simple biological visual system, for use as a pre-processor in a pattern recognition system. In 1969, he joined the Bell Telephone Laboratories in Holmdel, N.J., to carry out research on coding techniques for television signals. This work involved fundamental studies into the properties of human visual perception and of stationary and moving images. The results of these studies were then incorporated into the design of reduced bit rate encoders for television signals. In 1973 he joined Bell-Northern Research in Ottawa where he was responsible for initiating work on the application of digital signal processing techniques to video and voice communication systems. Coding techniques for NTSC color and conference TV signals were developed. He returned to Vancouver to join MacDonald, Dettwiler & Associates Ltd. in 1976 where he worked initially as Project Leader on a system involving the use of a digital signal processor and a film recorder for producing geometrically corrected satellite imagery. He was appointed to his present position of Vice-President of Technology in 1977. Dr. Connor is a member of the SMPTF's Digital Television Study Group and of the National Research Council Associate Committee for Automatic Control. He holds five patents in the field of digital television. - Copyright
