A Platform for Constructing Distributed Asset Management Systems

Abstract: With television's transition to digital comes the requirement to manage a variety of distributed assets. A facility-wide management system must oversee these assets even if the creation and storage systems already include smaller-scale management tools. We believe that it is unreasonable to assume that software vendors will give up control over their own asset management in favor a completely centralized system. Therefore, the greatest chance of success is through tools that allow a variety of systems to collaborate. The objective of the ContentShare Platform is to enable this collaboration. Neither a monolithic database, nor an end-user asset management system, the ContentShare Platform is a set of active software components, called agents and brokers, that allows application software to include standardized data exchange interfaces. These interfaces present a layer of abstraction allowing multiple applications to share information about their assets, in a peer-to-peer environment, without giving up control. This ultimately permits systems to grow as a facility grows and allows an organization to expand with minimal architectural impact.

Steve Bilow received his BFA from California Institute of the Arts in 1982 with studies in music technology and video. He pursued graduate studies in computer science at Portland State University with research interests in computer graphics, object-oriented methodology, and software metrics. Bilow has held positions on the executive committees for the ACM OOPSLA conferences, the Los Angeles chapter of the Audio Engineering Society, and the Computer-Human Interaction Forum of Oregon. He was book review editor for the Journal of Object-oriented Programming and is the author of more than 60 publications. He is currently marketing manager for the ContentShare Platform and other Media Software Products at the Grass Valley Group Inc., Beaverton, Oregon. Mr. Bilow is a member of SMPTE and the Association of Computing Machinery.

Scott Libert received his BFA from the University of Hawaii in 1987 with studies in electronic music and computer programming. Libert has worked 12 years in the telecommunications, multimedia and video industries designing and implementing distributed systems applications with a focus on object-oriented design. He has authored several articles on distributed software architecture and has a U.S. patent pending for the ContentShare Platform. He is currently Chief Architect for the ContentShare Platform at the Grass Valley Group Inc., Beaverton, Oregon.

Anil M. Murching received the B. Tech. degree in electronics and communication engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India, in 1991, and the MS degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics, and the PhD degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, New York, in 1992, 1995 and 1997, respectively. He is currently with the Grass Valley Group Inc., Beaverton, Oregon. His research interests include content-based image and video indexing, parsing, searching, and browsing, video compression, and video segmentation. He is the author of seven journal and conference papers, and has twelve U.S. patents pending in image and video segmentation. Dr. Murching is a member of the IEEE and Sigma Xi.

Dave Slack has an extensive background in television technology having served as chief engineer at the New England Sports Network and in a variety of applications engineering, marketing and engineering management positions. Mr. Slack is currently Program Manager for the ContentShare Platform at the Grass Valley Group Inc., Beaverton, Oregon.
