Abstract
Improved resolution has been the principle justification for the adoption of 4K / Ultra HD to date, leading many to question the benefit of UHD when compared to existing HD 1080p services at typical access bandwidths available to viewers. Since resolution alone isn't enough to give UHD the fidelity expected, there has been renewed interest in implementing High Dynamic Range (HDR) along with the related issue of Wider Color Gamut. To date HDR has been demonstrated on content prepared offline, leaving the question of how HDR can be implemented on live content? This paper will explain why HDR is needed, outline the likely implementations, discuss the impact on existing workflows and implications for existing and future screen requirements.
