Abstract: Converting satellite-enabled video networks to MPEG-4 compression and DVB-S2 modulation allows operators to realize significant bandwidth savings and subsequent revenue generation - making new HD programming more feasible. But do the bandwidth savings and increased revenue offset the cost of launching a HD channel for a private network? This paper explores strategies to move to HD without expending exorbitant bandwidth costs and compare the different media distribution options. Among the ideas presented will be: Moving to MPEG-4 HD codecs from MPEG-2 Transitioning to HD content creation Maximizing the DVB-S2 modulation spec Converting to a file-based broadcasting platform Simulcasts to legacy TV monitors at the receive sites
