- Abstract
- The Grand Alliance, a consortium formed in May 1993 by AT&T, David Sarnoff Research Center, General Instrument Corporation, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Philips Electronics North America Corporation, Thomson Consumer Electronics, and Zenith Electronics Corporation, proposed the use of the eight-level, vestigial sideband (8-VSB) transmission subsystem for Advanced Television (ATV) broadcast service after extensive comparative testing of 8-VSB and 32-QAM at the laboratories of the Advanced Television Test Center (ATTC) and CableLabs. A high-data-rate 16-VSB transmission subsystem was proposed for cable use. A description of the VSB transmission system can be found in References [1], [2], and [3]. The Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Service (ACATS), an all-industry committee originally formed in 1987 to assist the FCC in establishing a new television service to replace the NTSC system currently in use, approved this VSB transmission subsystem recommendation as one component of the high definition television (HDTV) system under development
