Abstract
The use of network connections is set to expand rapidly in television. At the same time television is changing faster than ever with new formats, DTV and high definition on the horizon. The object is to specify and create an open network appropriate for today's requirements as well as meeting tomorrow's growing, and more demanding needs. This has to work in parallel with the existing connections to provide additional I/O and without compromising their performance. For economy and compatibility the base technology should come from the computer industry but the choices require careful study. Quantel's work has resulted in Clipnet which is aimed at more efficient operation and better access to material.

bio
John is a graduate of the University of North Wales, Bangor where he gained an honours degree in Electronic Engineering. He has a long history in the professional video business, his interest first being stimulated during an undergraduate vacation scheme at the BBC. After graduating, John began his professional career as a Design Engineer at Quantel's Research and Development department in Newbury where he worked on a variety of products including Picturebox and Mirage. John moved on to become a design team Project Leader at a company producing optical sorting equipment in London where he gained experience of CCD camera design and image recognition techniques. He returned to Quantel in 1988 and after another spell in Newbury moved to Quantel's Japanese subsidiary where his fluency in Japanese proved a great asset. In Japan he gained first-hand experience of the advance of digital technology in broadcast and postproduction industries including work with graphics products in the world's first HDTV broadcast systems. John spent a total of nine and a half years in Japan where he held the position of Technical Director. John O'Neill moved to Quantel's regional headquarters in Hong Kong in early 1998 to take up the position of Regional Engineering Director, Quantel Asia Pacific Ltd where he has overall responsibility for all technical aspects of Quantel's business in the region.
